Do you wonder frequently during your day what you should have done in the past or need to do in the future? When you constantly get pushed in the past or pulled in the future, that becomes a problem because you almost never live in the present moment!! Whether you are doing something as mundane as brushing your teeth or as intense as working out, you need to focus on the quality of what you are doing at that moment; otherwise, you are setting yourself up for unfortunate issues in the future. I'm a perfect example of a person who would brush her teeth and have no idea how well I did because I was too busy thinking about what I had to do 20 min from that point. Because of this poor habit, I ended up brushing too hard and incorrectly and now have gum recession that is probably going to cost me a lot of money to rectify.
I started becoming more mindful last March after coming back from an IdeaFitness conference. I learned a lot of new techniques and ideas in Washington that really required me to practice them as a trainer while teaching them to my clients. In order to completely understand what my muscles should and should not be doing, I closed my eyes through most of my workouts to completely get in touch with my body. After doing this for such a long time I now have trained my body to stay in present most of the day and it has been a real eye opener. I find myself staying calmer during the day and not thinking as often in the past and future. I now train my clients to keep their eyes closed as well for most of their training sessions. How about starting to close your eyes more often when doing things and see what happens. Hopefully you will find it to be a real eye opener like I did!!
